The Akumal Sanctuary was created with the purpose of housing various species of wild fauna that have been affected mainly by anthropogenic factors, preventing in most cases their reintroduction to their natural habitat.
More than 250 wild animals, from more than 40 different species are currently living in the Sanctuary. Most animals come from hotels, circuses and private houses that could no longer keep the animals. Some were victims of illegal trafficking and/or have been placed through PROFEPA in the Akumal Sanctuary.
Quintana Roo is one of the states with the highest urban growth and tourism development in Mexico and in the rest of the world. Human activities in forest areas have severe impacts on the well-being of wildlife as it causes irreversible losses of habitats, ecosystems and biodiversity as a whole.

We promote participation through volunteer work, academic stays, donations and visits to the Sanctuary of Akumal in Quintana Roo, Mexico.
